The IFS Prelim Exam is also termed as CSAT / Civil Service Aptitude Test which is a common phase of exam for all Civil Services exams. IFS prelim exam is the basic qualifier for the main exam. Note:
- The Prelim exam has two papers according to the above table. Each paper will carry 200 marks.
- Paper-I is General Ability Test and will have 80 questions. Each question will carry 2.5 marks.
- Paper-II is the English language and will have a total of 100 questions. Each question will have 2 marks.
- There will be negative marking applicable. A deduction of 1/3 marks will be applicable for each wrong answer.
- The Prelim exam is a multiple-choice exam hence against each question. There will four options against each question.
- Entrants selecting multiple options for one question will be considered as wrong answers and marks deduction will be applied as per the negative marking rule.
- However, there will be no deduction for leaving a question unanswered.
- The question in the prelim exam will be either in English or Hindi language.

The Mains of IFS is a descriptive exam. Entrants have to write essay-type lengthy answers. There will be a total of 6 papers. Paper I and II are separated as Qualifier paper and Merit paper. - There will be a deduction of 5% marks if the handwriting of the entrants is not clear or understandable.
- Rewarding will be done for proper handwriting and orderly answers.
- Entrants must use SI units where ever required.
- Entrants must use the international numbering sequence in the answer paper.
- Usage of conventional calculators is allowed for IFS entrants.
- However, programmable calculators are not allowed in the exam hall.
