The stenographers need to know both Hindi and English stenography to be able to work efficiently. The official work of the Govt of India is mostly done in either Hindi or in English so a Stenographer needs to know stenography in both languages.
The stenographers posted under their respective Ministry depts will have to note down speeches delivered by the ministers & Senior office of the dept. This is the most common job responsibility of a stenographer. This is where their skill for shorthand will come to work.
Stenographer appointed to an officer or minister will be assisting them to write the speech that would deliver and write an announcement for Ministry offices. Hence, the Stenographers must have good knowledge about the political and social affairs happening day today. As they would have to write speeches and notices associated with all these affairs.
The PRO office gets the most benefit out of a stenographer. As the Stenographer’s primary job is to note down everything. Stenographers also help in writing down a govt’s stand on a particular issue. Thereafter the PRO office distributes the same info to the public regularly.
The Stenographers travel along with the ministers and officials in various press conferences. They make note of the statements made by the ministers or officials for later use.
The skill test is mainly conducted to test shorthand skills for noting down speeches. The exam syllabus also consists of subjects like politics and current affairs to ensure the entrants are capable enough to handle their job roles as they have to work with ministries. There are various components of a Stenographer’s salary. There are many allowances and benefits added to their salary depending upon their group and grade pays. The good news is, the 7th pay commission revised the salary of the Stenographer and granted a hike by 22% – 24%. Both the Groups are provided with certain allowances which are as follows:
Let’s have a look at the allowances and how they affect the salary of a Stenographer in detail.
As we know what are the three allowances form the main components of the salary. Let’s have look at the % to which the 7th Pay Commission has increased.
This is generally provided to the SSC Stenographers to meet their house rent need. Its a variable component and may vary according to the posting location of an entrant. The govt of India has divided cities or locations into three categories X, Y, and Z. The HRA for X class cities was 24% of Basic Pay. Similarly, it was 16% of Basic Pay for Y class city and 8% of Basic Pay for Z class cities.
However, the 7th pay commission has now revised it:
This allowance is provided to meet the living cost adjustments. The 7th pay commission has revised it to 12% of the Basic. This is the same for all groups.
The current % of TA is classified according to the posting location of an employee. For major cities, it is 3600 and for all other places, it is 1800.
We would have to look at the formula of calculating the salary for Group C (Grade B- GP 4600/4200):
Salary in Total= Basic Pay (44,900 + HRA + TA + DA + DA on TA + Others.
Salary in hand for X cities= 57,300 Group- C
Now let’s have look at the formula of calculating the salary for Group D (GP – 2400):
Salary in Total= Basic Pay (25,500) + HRA + TA + Other.
Salary in hand for X class Cities = 34,500 Group- D
The salary calculation provided here is as per the official website of SSC and further change in the salary structure will be notified through the official website.
After five to six years of regular service, an employee will be eligible for a change in grade pay.
A stenographer has to accompany a minister or govt official in press conferences, public speeches, etc and there they have to note down the speeches and give a briefing of them. The speech or conference can be in any of these two languages. So the employee must know the short-hands of both languages.
After the 7th pay commission, the current DA of all groups is 12%.
The X category cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune.
The Y category contains almost 100 towns with a population above 5 Lakhs.
The Z category contains rural areas and living cost or house rent cost is not as high as the major cities hence the Z class city has the lowest HRA.
The in hand SSC Stenographer Salary for all the candidates who will join the department will have basic pay. The salary will also include a lot of allowances i.e. DA, HRA, Paper allowance, telephone allowance etc. The gross in-hand salary for all the canddiates will come down to Rs 25,000 to 30,000 after all the deductions.
